Amazon で購買ボタンを押す人は、そこを訪れた時点で、すでに「これを買おう」という意志を持っている。そうした人に、「これを買おうという、お前の人間性それ自体が間違っている」などと、その人を真っ向から大きく否定してしまうと、否定されたその人は、むしろその本を買うことで、その否定に対抗する。結果として全面的な否定というものは、購買をむしろ後押ししてしまう可能性がある。

的を一つずらせば達成できる目標に、それ以上の力を叩きつけてしまうと、目標はむしろ遠のく。購入する人をためらわせる文章は、たとえば「この本が目的とするところは理解できるものの、根拠になった文献を読み間違えている」だとか、「この本が取り上げている領域はたしかに面白いのだが、この本については支払った金額に見合った内容を持っていない」といった書きかたになる。

その分野の知識を仕入れたいという、購入する人の意志を肯定しつつ、「その目的は正しいがこの本を買うという手段はベストじゃない」という、肯定9割、否定1割の態度を取ってみせることが、購買をそらす役に立つ。
